Biomedical & Biohazardous Waste Disposal in Yukon
The Yukon is Canada’s smallest and most western territory. With a population of less than 36,000 people living in 482,000 square kilometres, the Yukon Territory is home to acres of untouched wildlife, mountain terrain, and of course the famous Yukon River. In fact, the name Yukon originated from the Locheux native language, meaning “great river” and flows through the territory and right into Alaska!
In the mid-1807’s, Yukon experienced its 1st mass wave of immigrants. Over the course of 10 years, the Yukon’s population increased to roughly 100,000 as prospectors came from across the Pacific to mine their riches in the Klondike Gold Rush. The increase in population justified the establishment of a police force and eventually led to the separation of Yukon Territory from other western provinces. Unfortunately, the Gold Rush was a brief, albeit exciting adventure for gold miners. Yukon has the harshest winter conditions of any place in North America, with temperatures as low as negative 60 degrees Celsius. By 1940, there were less than 5000 people in the entire territory, which is roughly 1 person for every 100 square kilometres.
Today, Yukon is growing roughly 20% every 10 years and has a ton of draw for adventure seeking tourists. Yukon boasts Canada’s highest peak, Mount Logan, which rises a whopping 5,559 meters, and continues to rise due to tectonic plate activity. Yukon is also home to what is considered the most difficult race in the world- The Yukon Quest. This international sled dog race trails between Fairbanks, Alaska and White Horse, Yukon. Contenders race for 10 -16 days along 1600 km of frozen rivers, mountain ranges, and isolated northern villages in temperatures as low as 50 degrees Celsius!
Due to Yukon’s sporadic population, many residents must travel to nearby cities, such as Vancouver, for medical treatment. With nearly 75% of the population residing in the capital city of White Horse, the medical treatment of the entire province falls on White Horse General Hospital. In a busy hospital setting, efficiency and reduction of labour is important for both staff and patients. As the population of Yukon continues to grow, government officials and medical professionals seek to expand sustainable healthcare accessibility throughout the region. Yukon's regulations state that all healthcare waste must be segregated at the point of generation from non-hazardous wastes and should be segregated from other classes of biomedical wastes. Facilities are required to maintain compliant segregation, as they are liable from the point of generation to its final disposal; this is why partnering with a compliant biomedical waste management partner with all the appropriate transport and disposal permits is paramount.
