Visitors should absolutely not miss Halifax's Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, the oldest and largest Maritime museum in Canada. While there, you will learn about the Halifax Explosion, a maritime disaster that occurred on the morning of 6 December 1917. A French cargo ship laden with high explosives, collided another vessel in a strait connecting the upper Halifax Harbour to Bedford Basin. A resulting fire on board the Mont-Blanc ignited her cargo, causing a massive explosion that completely levelled nearly all structures within an 800-metre radius, including the Richmond district of Halifax.
