Biomedical & Biohazardous Waste Disposal in Halifax
If you're looking for the Hali-facts, you've come to the right place! Established as a town in 1749 by British settlers led by Governor Edward Cornwallis and incorporated as a city in 1842, Halifax is Nova Scotia's capital and boasts a population of more than 400,000. In 1996, the government of Nova Scotia dissolved the City of Halifax, consolidated the four municipalities within Halifax County, and formed the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), a single-tier regional government covering the entire area.
Halifax owes its existence largely to its location on one of the largest and deepest ice-free natural harbours in the world, which in time made Halifax one of the most important Canadian commercial ports and military bases on the Atlantic seaboard. From its establishment as a town in 1749, Halifax continually served as one of the most heavily fortified British army and navy bases outside Europe until its dockyard and defenses were taken over by the Canadian government in 1906. During World War I and World War II, Halifax was Canada’s largest and most important naval base.
Visitors should absolutely not miss Halifax's Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, the oldest and largest Maritime museum in Canada. While there, you will learn about the Halifax Explosion, a maritime disaster that occurred on the morning of 6 December 1917. A French cargo ship laden with high explosives, collided another vessel in a strait connecting the upper Halifax Harbour to Bedford Basin. A resulting fire on board the Mont-Blanc ignited her cargo, causing a massive explosion that completely levelled nearly all structures within an 800-metre radius, including the Richmond district of Halifax.
Like a phoenix, Halifax resurrected after the fire and came back even stronger. Visitors will enjoy a bustling food scene fuelled by local ingredients, not to mention ridiculously fresh seafood! The quintessential nautical town bustles with art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants.
