Biomedical & Biohazardous Waste Disposal in Newfoundland & Labrador

Home to a former Viking colony and one of the largest, fluffiest canine breeds – Newfoundland & Labrador is the easternmost province of Canada. Long before Columbus set foot in the new world, the now UNESCO world heritage site, L’Anse aux Meadows, had been founded by Vikings in the year 1,000, bringing with them the black “bear” dogs known as Newfoundlands.

The Newfoundland dog is best known for its working ability. They have a very gentle demeanour, webbed toes, and a thick, double layered coat suitable for the frigid conditions of Canada’s northern province. Newfoundland pups were trained to reel ropes in from the sea, retrieving lost fishing gear, and rescuing humans from choppy Arctic waters. Talk about man’s best friend!

Aside from its rich historical culture, Newfoundland & Labrador has an iconic coastal charm. This quintessential Atlantic coast is full of salt-drenched cliffs and extensive glaciers, and its roaring winds smell of spruce trees and salty ocean air. Contrasting the rugged geography are brightly coloured homes staggered along the cliffs of fishing villages. The locals are as warm and welcoming as they come, and are likely to treat you to traditional dishes like Fish ’n’ Brewis and Tinned Cream.

This province has a lot to be proud of, but perhaps the most notable is their motivation to go green. In 2007, Newfoundland & Labrador announced The Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy. The $200 million initiative ensures that waste management meets appropriate levels of protection of the environment.

Let Daniels Health run a “Waste Audit” for your facility. We want to partner with you to drive sustainable and compliant results in your biomedical waste disposal.

How does the Daniels waste audit process work?

Once a biohazardous waste stream is identified, the containers in a designated area of your facility will be “tagged” so they are easily recognised when they arrive at our facility. Each container is tracked to a location by barcode and containers are weighed upon disembarkation. Container contents are analysed and photographed to indicate proper and improper segregation by waste stream, and trend-like exceptions are noted against each location for corrective action.

Using waste audits to improve your waste segregation potential

We implement solutions using the results of the waste audit to provide an in-depth insight into your facility’s biomedical waste segregation behaviours. Based on your audit, the Daniels team can facilitate a plan that includes training to educate staff on proper segregation and correct biohazardous waste disposal methods to minimise compliance risks.

Segregation saves

When your facility is equipped with the correct segregation solutions and education, especially around heavily regulated biomedical waste streams such as sharps, RMW and RCRA waste, not only do you immediately reduce your risk of staff injury and hefty fines for non-compliance, you cut costs by only paying for the biohazardous waste disposal required, while lessening your environmental footprint.
